Most of the incidents of domestic disputes reported to the police are related to violence.
The Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) defines domestic violence as "any incident of threatening behaviour, violence or abuse (psychological, physical, sexual, financial or emotional) between adults who are or who have been intimate partners or family members, regardless of gender."
Domestic violence takes place also in same-sex relationships. There is growing recognition of this phenomenon and initiatives to address the issue are being developed. If you are experiencing domestic violence, there are services listed on our What's in my Area database which can offer you advice and support. There are also leaflets to download below which may be of some help.
