Are internships paid?

Unfortunately, internships are voluntary and are not paid, but we do reimburse reasonable travel costs to and from our office (within London) and provide £5 a day as a lunch allowance when you provide receipts. We also cover any reasonable expenses incurred in the course of your work with us.

Will an internship lead to a job at Stonewall?

No, internships are not preludes to jobs at Stonewall. All jobs at Stonewall are awarded on merit in open recruitment exercises.

What activities and tasks would an intern undertake?

The activities that interns undertake will vary depending on what department the internship is with and on the specifics of each internship. More specific information about what activities are likely to be undertaken in each internship can be found in the Application Pack for each advertised internship position.

What do you look for in an intern?

The specific qualities we look for in each intern will vary depending on the nature of the internship advertised, but some general qualities we look for are:

• A commitment to LGB and equality issues
• Reliability
• Good attention to detail
• Computer literacy
• Good organisational skills

Do you have to be lesbian, gay or bisexual to intern at Stonewall?

As with our paid staff, we welcome internship applicants from all sections of society. All appointments are made on merit. 

At October 2010:

• 22% of our paid staff were heterosexual (up from 8% in 2006)
• 50% of our paid staff were women (up from 36% in 2006)
• 22% of our London paid staff were from black and minority ethnic communities (up from 10% in 2006)
• 18% of our paid staff were disabled (up from 6% in 2006)

How long do internships last and what time commitment do they require?

Internships last for at least a month and typically last 2-3 months. They require a time commitment of between 3-5 days a week. Our office day is generally from 9.30am-5.30pm but is fairly flexible.

How old do I need to be to apply?

Generally our internships are only for those aged 18 or older, usually undergraduate or postgraduate students. If you are under 18 there may however be opportunities for you to volunteer with Stonewall more informally. To find out about volunteering opportunities please click here.

How will I be managed as an intern?

Each intern is assigned a member of staff who serves as their line manager for the duration of the internship.

What is the office dress code for interns?

Generally the dress code is smart/casual. However you may need smart business attire for any external meetings or events that you attend.
