Stonewall welcomes Prime Minister's support of trans community

  • Prime Minister promises to streamline and demedicalise Gender Recognition Act

  • Trans people continue to face unacceptable levels of abuse

  • Stonewall CEO Ruth Hunt echoes Prime Minister's words: 'Trans rights are human rights'

Being a visible ally to trans people has never been more important

Ruth Hunt, Chief Executive of Stonewall, said:

'We are really pleased that the Prime Minister used her speech at the Pink News Awards last night to reaffirm the government’s commitment to reform the Gender Recognition Act. The Act is now extremely outdated. It forces any trans person who wants their gender to be legally recognised to go through years of medical tests and bureaucratic red tape. It is unnecessary, and causes huge distress to those going through it.

'Trans people face unacceptable levels of abuse in our society – 2 in 5 have experienced a hate crime in the last 12 months alone. Being a visible ally to trans people has never been more important.  Like the Prime Minister said: LGBT rights are human rights. We should all be proud to stand up and support them.'
